A few years ago I joined something called Five Pound Football Club. A bunch of football fans joined together by the idea to own a football club. We never wanted to be majority shareholders, it was important that the members kept at least 51%.
We looked around and decided to go for either Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. One of the clubs we discussed was Monmouth AFC. We didn’t know much about them, but since I knew the name from the early Arthurian sagas written by Geoffrey of Monmouth, who wrote ”History of the Kings of Britain” in the 12th Century, I voted for them.
Our project is no longer active, it is now replaced with 1876 Kingfishers Owners Club, which anyone can join.
What I like about this project is the fact that it is now open for everybody, not just us who started FPFC, and that nobody can own more than 49%. This ensures that it will always be the sport and not the money that will rule. Which to a person with the roots in punk answell as in the political left feels just great.
And today I recieved my share certificate to prove that I am a shareholder. Cool …
